Monmouth-Roseville Schools Considering Unified Grading Scale
The Monmouth-Roseville School District doesn't have a standard grading scale for all of its schools, but it could in just about a month's time.

The District-238 School Board Tuesday night heard about a proposal to change the grading scales so that an A equals at least 90-percent, a B 80-percent, a C 70-percent, and a D 60-percent, just like it is at Monmouth-Roseville High School.

Outgoing District Curriculum Director Sue Wilson chaired a district-wide committee that looked into the matter, and she says different grading scales for the elementary and junior high schools caused some problems.

"There is a gap between sixth grade and junior high since the elementary had a higher grading scale, it kept some of the children from programs that would be more of the higher level students' programs at junior high."

Wilson says a couple of different grading scales were presented to faculty members, and the vast majority supported 90-80-70-60.

She says many expressed concerns against changing the high school grading scale, thinking it would effect grade point averages used for scholarships and other things.

The District-238 board will vote on the proposal next month -- the first meeting officially for new superintendent Paul Woehlke. The Galesburg School District finance chief takes the job in Monmouth over from Martin Payne, whose last meeting was Tuesday night.
