Bridgeway Preparing for Worst, Hoping for Best, in State Budget Debacle
An official with a Galesburg-based human service agency says all is operating as normal as it can be for now, despite funding from the State of Illinois being possibly anything but normal.

Bridgeway Chief Operating Officer Bill Nelson says since Governor Pat Quinn proposed his so-called "doomsday budget" if lawmakers didn't pass an income tax increase in order to fund a better budget, he's heard plenty of rumors about the status of his organization -- from services being cut to group homes being cut to other things.

But Nelson says while it is true that some layoff notices have been issued, in hopes that they'll have to be rescinded, nothing is being closed. "We absolutely have no plan, at this point, to relocate any consumers that are living in Bridgeway-operated apartment or group home facilities," Nelson said. "But we are involving them in understanding the situation as it pertains to the kind of services that they are involved in with Bridgeway."

Bridgeway operates facilities from the Peoria area to Burlington and the Quad Cities, including their home base in Galesburg, in Kewanee, in Fulton County, and elsewhere.

Nelson says no matter what happens, his organization and others need to see "a different budget solution" from Springfield than what's in place right now.

He calls the current state situation the worst he's ever seen.
