Illinois Man Witnesses Horror Following Deadly Shooting at U-S Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D-C
An Illinois man was among the people inside the U-S Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Wednesday afternoon when shots rang out, resulting one fatality.

A man, identified as 88-year old James Von Brunn is accused of carrying a rifle into the museum about 1 p-m Eastern time and opening fire. Stephen Johns, a security guard, was shot and killed. Another guard returned fire and wounded Von Brunn, who was reported to be in critical condition Thursday morning.

Mark Lippert, a radio station sales manager in LaSalle who was visiting the museum, says he heard the shots.

"We were in the Daniels Children Stories section on the main floor and we heard what sounded like four loud pops, and I'd thought somebody had dropped something on the floor. My fiance said to me 'that sounded like gunshots.'"

Lippert says he saw several schoolchildren running toward him with horrified looks on their faces. He says that's when he knew someone had been shot, and the top priority at that point was finding an emergency exit from the museum.

News reports cite authorities in D-C as describing Von Brunn is a white supremacist and extreme anti-Semite.

The museum is closed Thursday in tribute to the slain security guard.
