Illinois Recall Vote Off the Table for Now
Illinois lawmakers were hoping to decide whether voters should be allowed to recall a sitting governor before they left for the summer, but they ran out of time.

State Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) assures it will be discussed when they return to Springfield . If approved by lawmakers and signed by the governor, voters will be asked on their 2010 ballots if they'd like the option to vote the Illinois governor out of office.

State Senator Michael Noland (D-Elgin), who's sponsoring the idea in the Senate, says there have been ideas in the past to allow recall of any elected official, but at this time, Noland says it’s a better idea to focus on the one office that has been "the bane of [lawmakers’] existence" for the past few years.

If voters decide they want this provision added to the Illinois constitution, 20 representatives, 10 senators and 15 percent of those who voted for governor in the last election would have to agree to the recall idea. In the case of the 2006 election, that would mean 15 percent of roughly 3.5 million people.
