Gang Recruiting Bill Passes Legislature
A bill outlawing "gang recruiting" has passed the Illinois General Assembly. It would be a crime to threaten someone into joining -- or staying in -- a gang.

"We have to nip it when the community finds out how these recruitments are occurring," said State Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero), who credits the community for trying to be vigilant. She says she is holding job fairs to try to provide better ways for young people to spend their time.

The crime of gang recruiting would be a felony and includes a coercion or inducement by cell phone or the Internet.

S.B. 141 has passed the House and Senate and awaits the governor's action.
