Durbin Admits to Using Charter Flights
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) acknowledges sometimes traveling on charter flights, even as members of Congress criticized corporate executives for arriving in Washington on private planes.

Durbin says he usually flies coach on commercial flights, but sometimes has to take a charter to get somewhere in a hurry, or to go where commercial flights don't go. "I don't do it very often, but sometimes there's just no other way to turn," he said.

The question was raised after a study revealed senators' travel expenses for the first six months of the fiscal year. Durbin is 50th out of 99 senators, at $38,668.41. Sen. Roland Burris is 86th, at $9,482.28, but he was not in office for the entire period. Travel expenses cover commercial flights and charter flights for the senator and any staffer who travels with him.
