Schock to Tour Gitmo Today
A local Congressman will be out of the country Monday, but will be touring a controversial U.S.-operated facility.

U.S. Rep Aaron Schock is one of several Congressmen that will be touring the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Schock says the goal of Monday's fact-finding mission is for him to form his own opinion on whether the facility should be closed. He says he doesn't want to be influenced by outside sources. He says his initial opinion is that the facility should stay open.

The Peoria Republican, whose 18th Congressional District covers a portion of Knox County, will join four members of an intelligence committee.

President Barack Obama has planned to close the detention center where some alleged terrorists are being held. U.S. officials have been searching for places to resettle detainees, lobbying hard with foreign governments.
