FIRST ON WGIL: National Guard Armory Could Get New Look
FIRST REPORTED: 3:00pm 6/15/09 Galesburg's City Manager says he got what could be described as some good news about the old National Guard Armory in Galesburg that could still help it attract a potential tenant.

Dane Bragg told the WGIL Morning News Monday that he received an e-mail late Friday indicating that the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has signed off on the city being able to re-use the North Broad Street armory for some other purpose.

Bragg tells WGIL while it's a step forward in getting the building used again on a permanent basis, there's still a long road ahead.

"We're one step closer in making that happen. That certainly isn't the last step but each month we keep trying to make a little more progress on that particular building to get it redeveloped but it's definitely on our radar screen."

The city was reported to be in so-called final negotiations with a developer who was believed to want to make the property residential. Bragg's e-mail, he says, came from the architect of the developer.

It's not clear what state those negotiations may be in now, if they're going on at all, and Bragg did not elaborate on any negotiations during our interview.

Bragg says it was the hope that the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency would be more interested in keeping the exterior in tact rather than the interior, which he says the e-mail indicates.
