Illinois Mayors at Washington Conference
A handful of Illinois mayors are wrapping up proceedings at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Providence, R.I.

Their big concern is money for infrastructure, with the stimulus program helping, but leaving many needs unsatisfied, says Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing. Not only do streets need resurfacing and repairing, but water and sewer systems have components that are in some cases 100 years old, and cities have a hard time coming up with the large amounts of money needed to tackle these projects.

Champaign County is getting about $4 million for a variety of needs.

O'Fallon Mayor Gary Graham, who put in requests for $11 million from the federal stimulus program, says the stimulus projects aren't under way yet, and due to a labor dispute, representatives of the administration were not at the conference to explain what the delay is.

The conference ends Tuesday. Mayors from Arlington Heights, Highland Park, Normal, Springfield and Urbana are also in attendance.
