Local Radio Legend To Be Honored By Fellow Broadcasters
A Galesburg man who has been in local radio for six decades and who got his start here on WGIL is being honored for a long career of simply doing what he loves.

The Illinois Broadcasters Association is awarding Jack Larson its Pioneer Award during the annual IBA convention Wednesday in East Peoria.

Larson, who currently hosts "Music With Memories" weekday mornings on WAIK, tells WGIL he doesn't mind talking with his competitors, because he doesn't see them as such. "I don't look upon (WGIL) as competition," Larson said. "I look upon us as a media that is doing a job for not only the entertainment factor, but the educational factor, and, of course, doing the job for the client. We all have different formats, and everybody doesn't listen to the same thing."

Larson started at WGIL playing, as he described it, an armful of records on Sundays, and later went on to a stint managing the former WDRL in Monmouth, and came back to WGIL for a time, before settling in at WAIK with "Music with Memories."

Larson, who gave WGIL some of the credit for him even being nominated for the IBA's Pioneer Award, says he'll remember this day for two things: the award, and it being the day 65 years ago the woman who would become his wife arrived in Texas to marry him.
