Cullerton Calls For Republican Wish List
Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) is calling on Republican legislative leaders to lay out what kind of budget they would vote on.

Speaking Wednesday morning in Chicago prior to a meeting with legislative leaders and Gov. Pat Quinn, Cullerton told reporters that the Senate had already passed a balanced budget that would have relied on $2 billion in cuts and additional revenue from a sales tax expansion to cover services and certain goods currently not taxed, and an income tax increase.

Now that the legislative session is over, a super-majority is needed to pass a tax increase, which means Republicans in the House would have to come on board. Republicans are not needed on a strictly party-line vote in the Senate, but Cullerton wants their participation.

On Tuesday, Quinn said he hoped that legislative leaders would hammer out a deal to fill the $11.6 billion budget gap and save social services.
