Sheley Pleads Not Guilty in Jailhouse Assault Case
POSTED 4:15pm 6/2/09 The Sterling man accused of getting into an altercation with Knox County Jailers while awaiting trial on charges stemming from one of eight alleged murders has pleaded not guilty.

29-year old Nicholas Sheley was in Knox County Circuit Court for an arraignment hearing on charges including Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and Criminal Damage to property in connection to the April 17th incident where he allegedly punched one of the jailers, and threw metal chair legs at three others, after he was believed to have refused an order to go back to his cell from a maximum security day area.

Sheley made the plea in front of Judge Dwayne Morrison, who was given the case back after his attorney, public defender Jim Harrell, made a motion a couple weeks ago to have Judge Steven Bordner taken off the case.

Judge Stephen Mathers will preside over any jury trial in the matter, which Sheley requested when making his not guilty plea.

A July sixth pre-trial hearing has been scheduled in the case, with a possible criminal trial of July 27th.

Sheley also stands accused of 10 felony counts of murder for the alleged bludgeoning death of 65-year old Ronald Randall of Galesburg, and also faces other murder charges in Whiteside County and Missouri as part of a two-state killing spree. The next court date in that case is July seventh.

Sheley remains jailed on $10 million in the murder case, and $500,000 bond in the assault case.
