Illinois Jobless Hits Record Highs
Illinois' unemployment rate for last month reached 10.1 percent, a 25-year high. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports that while the pace of job loss slowed a little in May, the numbers still reflect a sour national economy. The national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent is also a 25-year high.

Agency spokesman Greg Rivara says the hardest industries to feel job losses in Illinois continue to be manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; and construction. Job growth did occur in two sectors: leisure and hospitality, and in education and health services.

The number of jobs lost in May was 17,400, which brought the number of unemployed to 671,400, the highest since June 1983.

Rivara says the agency won't speculate on the impact of state budget cuts that could put 10,000 state workers on the unemployment rolls, plus more people who would be cut from local human services agencies across the state.
