Cleanup Begins Following Storms, Mayor Surveys Damage
The Mayor of Galesburg, and the Galesburg Fire Chief are warning residents to use extreme caution when cleaning up after severe weather battered the area early Thursday. Mayor Sal Garza Thursday morning said he was already out in Galesburg surveying damages from the storm in a number of neighborhoods and talking to residents to hear their concerns. He says most of the people he spoke with, talked about two things, when the power will be back on and when will the city get it all cleaned up.

Besides the lack of power and the mess created, Garza tells WGIL he had bigger concerns. "Everyone, to date, that I've talked to, they haven't incurred any type of injuries," Garza said. "And that really was my priority, to make sure everybody was okay."

Galesburg Fire Chief John Cratty says people without power need to be patient as crews are working as cautiously, and as quickly as possible to restore electricity to homes. He also says don't ever think that just because a power line is down and doesn't look to be a live wire, it could still be live and full of voltage. He says stay away from downed power lines and trees that have suffered severe damage as threats of injury remain. He says only the power company should be dealing with the lines.
