Red Cross Out Surveying Storms
The local Red Cross Chapter is on the scene of one of the hardest-hit areas in the Galesburg region following the storms that moved through early Thursday morning.

Western Illinois Chapter Executive Director Carrie Bernett says her volunteers spent most of the day Thursday out talking with police and residents throughout Knox, Warren, and Henderson Counties, determining just how bad the damage was, and considering opening up a shelter if need be, after the storms flared up around four a-m and even left many in the dark most of the day.

Bernett tells WGIL the volunteers they've trained understand the risks involved of going out in the aftermath of storm damage.

"Our volunteers are wonderful," Bernett said. "They go through disaster training, and they know how to handle these situations. We have a good team out there helping people out."

Red Cross officials say they have information available at their downtown Galesburg offices you can use when preparing for a storm, including safety tips and supplies you can stock up on. They also have NOAA weather radios they sell that turn on when weather watches and warnings are issued.
