Storms Wreak Havoc on Knox County
Mother nature apparently woke up in a bad mood Thursday morning.

A round of severe thunderstorms made their way through the Galesburg area starting around 4am Thursday and caused a lot of damage. While Galesburg, Abingdon, and Knoxville sustained plenty of damage, from downed trees, limbs and power lines, to hear residents tell it, a lot of damage occurred in the Yates City area as well.

One Yates City resident tells WGIL he's seen a lot of damage there and elsewhere.

"Cars have been crushed, we've got houses damaged from trees falling on them. Elmwood is in the same predicament. They've got the same total mess out there."

One resident outside Knoxville tells WGIL the storm damage she saw somewhat alarmed her. "There are lots of trees on Route 97. I had a tree fall on top of my husband's truck."

A number of reports came from all around the area of trees on top of vehicles and houses, some causing damage, some coming close to doing damage.

Ameren had 41-thousand customers without electricity statewide at the height of the storms. Yates City and Elmwood remained almost completely in the dark Friday morning. Over a thousand customers of Ameren were still without power in Galesburg.

Spoon River Electric Cooperative had 27-hundred of its members without electricity for a time. But officials there say most of those have been restored.
