No Perjury Charges Against Burris by Sangamon Co. S.A.
The investigation into whether U.S. Sen. Roland Burris (D-Illinois) committed perjury is over. Sangamon County State's Attorney John Schmidt has found that there's not enough evidence that Burris lied during the impeachment proceedings against then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Schmidt says his findings are based partly on how Burris answered questions, and partly on what he was asked. When a Republican representative asked Burris whether he talked to the governor's brother, Robert Blagojevich, and other Blagojevich friends about the open U.S Senate seat, Burris only replied that he'd spoken with "some friends" about the appointment. Schmidt would not speculate as to whether those lawmakers should have specifically asked Burris about those individuals one at a time. Schmidt says, "I can't go down that road, because 'if,' 'what,' didn't happen."

Schmidt says this case is now closed.
