Burris Makes Statement, Answers No Questions, About No Perjury Charges
The investigation into whether U.S. Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) committed perjury during testimony before an Illinois House committee is over, and Burris says he's pleased, but won't say much else.

Sangamon County State's Atty. John Schmidt said Friday that there is not enough evidence that Burris lied about the events leading up to his appointment, in testimony he gave during impeachment proceedings against then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Burris indicated he was pleased by the decision in a brief statement to reporters as he arrived Friday night at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. "As I have said from the beginning, I have never engaged in any pay-to-play, never perjured myself, and came to this seat in an honest and legal way," he said. "Today's announcement confirms all that."

For some time, Burris had promised to answer questions at length when Schmidt finished his investigation. Instead, upon arrival at the airport, the senator offered a 56-second statement and ducked into a waiting car as reporters fired questions that he ignored.

Now, he said, he will focus on serving the people of Illinois in the Senate.
