Helping Pets Beat the "Dog Days" of Summer
If you'll pardon the pun, between the weather last week and the hot weather forecast for this week, it might be a little "ruff" for your four-legged friends.

The Knox County Humane Society is asking dog and cat owners to make sure their pets continue to do okay for what, obviously, can be trying times for them -- things like making sure pets that stay outside a lot have plenty of shade, and plenty of water to keep them going when you're not home.

The Humane Society's Connie Clague tells WGIL if dogs don't have to be outside, they shouldn't be. "In our busy lives, we kind of forget sometimes about the animals outside," Clague said. "If at all possible, if they could bring them inside, that would even be better. But if it's not possible, then just make sure they're taken care of, and are not in harm's way as far as getting heatstroke."

Clague says another good thing to do for outside pets is to rinse them down with a cool rag in order to help keep them cool -- a good alternative, she says, if you were to lose your power.

She says the key is to make sure your pets are as comfortable as possible.
