More Wet Weather Cuts Short Work in Many Illinois Farm Fields
Wet weather again dominates the weekly USDA Illinois crop report.

Chief statistician Brad Schwab of the National Agricultural Statistics Service Illinois field office says only a couple of days last week were suitable for farmers to get out into the fields.

Schwab says the rainfall has been such a problem that some fields are losing nitrogen. The precautions that could help are costly for many farmers, Schwab says.

Soybean progress is behind - 67 percent emerged, compared to 73 percent at this time last year - and 91 percent for the five-year average. Corn is coming up, but only half as high as normal. The average is 17 inches, compared to 21 inches last year and 38 for the five-year average.
