Ameren Could Regulate Your Air Conditioning
Illinois' two major electric utilities are looking at interesting ways to conserve energy and stay within their forecasted summer peak loads.

Jackie Voiles, a state regulatory liaison for Ameren Illinois, recently told the Illinois Commerce Commission, that a pilot program being offered to customers would regulate when an air conditioner unit runs. The "Residential Direct Load Control Program" uses programmable thermostats that Ameren can turn on and off when they deem demand is excessive.

Voiles says customers who choose to participate in the program shouldn't feel much of a temperature change. "We have committed to no more than 12 cycling events in one year, and no more than four hours at a time," Voiles said. "A cycle is 15 minutes on, and 15 minutes off with the air conditioner."

Voiles says customers shouldn't feel much a of temperature change in the cycling periods and customers will ultimately save money on their utility bills.

Ameren is targeting 3,000 homes for the program. ComEd is also offering the program to a number of their customers.
