Illinois Gas Prices Up Substantially in June
Gasoline in Illinois has reached its highest price for the year.

The statewide average is $2.85, according to the monthly survey by the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club, up from $2.40 in May. It was only $1.92 in January.

Triple-A spokesman Nicole Niemi says drivers are feeling the difference, paying $10 to $20 more to fill their tank than they did earlier in the year, but she says it's not the kind of squeeze drivers faced last year at this time, when the statewide average was $4.13.

Niemi attributes the price increase to rising demand due to summer driving, and the higher price of crude oil.

Gas prices in the Galesburg area are currently below the state average.
