Elementary School Expansion Plans in District 202 Moving Forward
Mother nature even played a part in putting a small wrinkle in the plans to expand a local elementary school -- sort of.

The Knoxville School District Wednesday night voted to hire a bonding company and bond attorneys for the proposed $2.5 million dollar expansion of Mabel Woolsey Elementary School, the next to move forward before bids can be let for the project.

But District-202 architect Bob Johnson told the board those two rounds of severe weather last week didn't do even the planning process any favors.

"During the storm last week we lost a couple of days, so we moved the bid date back from July 16th to July 21st at 2:00 and that'll be a public bid opening at the board office."

Johnson says the board will meet a couple days later to vote on bids, and construction is still slated to begin in August and end before the end of the year.

He says a main bid for an expanded building with tile-floor gym 20-feet short of being regulation-size will be sought, with alternate bids being taken for just an athletic floor in that gym, and for a gym that is regulation size with an athletic floor.

Speaking of the storms, District-202 Superintendent Larry Carlton says a tree hit the roof of the district's north gym but did not cause major damage, while a tree next door to the district's pre-school took out part of a fence that will need to be replaced, but he says insurance should take care of it.
