Abingdon Aldermen Approve First Reading of City's New Fiscal Year Budget
A proposed spending plan for the new fiscal year in Abingdon that looks a lot like the current budget will be up for a final vote in two weeks.

The city council Monday night heard from alderman Myron Hovind, chairman of the Administration/Personnel/Finance Committee, who gave a rundown of the preliminary budget. Mayor Roger Stegall said at the last meeting the budget process was behind and he stressed the need to get moving on it. The new spending plan has to be approved by July 1st, the start of the new fiscal year.

Hovind says the biggest change is a $139,000 increase in expenditures for the water department.

"There is $75,000 for starting a five-year project to replace the fire hydrants, there is $9,600 that we're gonna have to replace annually some (residential) water meters...and there's also a roof repair and also we have to do some updating of some electrical equipment."

The plan also includes increases for the sewer and streets departments, along with decreases of $54,000 for economic development and $14,000 for the police department.

The total budget proposed for the new fiscal year is a little over $2.4 million - an $82,000 increase compared to the current spending plan. Hovind says there could be some small adjustments before the city council formally adopts the new budget on June 15th.
