Knox County Board Supports Sanitary District Grant at Special Meeting
POSTED: 9:37pm 6/3/09 The Knox County Board met in a special meeting to approve a number of resolutions relating to the Galesburg Sanitary District's possible community development grant.

The sanitary district is hoping for a Community Development Assistance Program grant which could be almost $350,000 for rehabbing a main wastewater interceptor that runs from Academy to Seminary Streets in Galesburg.

Steve Davis, Superintendent of the Galesburg Sanitary District said Wednesday night, the project will have minimal disruptions to residents and he tells WGIL if the interceptor isn't working correctly, the city could see sewage issues.

"The main interceptor is the artery, if you will, that all the other sewers drain into, that then transports the water to the Waste Water Treatment Plant," Davis said. "You think of it as THE main artery because if it doesn't work, then we're in serious difficulty. It's important for us to make sure this is structurally sound and operating properly."

Davis says the average time to find out if the grant has been approved may go quicker than usual in this case since he expects to get to work on the project this summer. He says the Knox County Board and Knox County residents have no financial obligations to pay for the project since the overall costs will be offset by the Community Development Assistance Program grant and the rest being covered by the Galesburg Sanitary District.
