FIRST ON WGIL: Knoxville Schools Not Waiting on Capital Bill To Help With Elementary School Expansion
POSTED 10:39am 6/4/09 The superintendent of the Knoxville School District isn't holding out hope for any money that could come to the district in the form of the Capital Bill that was passed in the waning hours of the Illinois General Assembly.

District-202 Superintendent Larry Carlton told that to the Knoxville School Board during a special meeting Wednesday night updating the status of plans being finalized ahead of the expansion of Mable Woolsey Elementary School.

The District is in line for Capital Infrastructure Grant money in the capital bill, but Carlton says one of the problems is, the district isn't the only one in line. "We're about 57th on the list," Carlton said. "There are schools on the list ahead of us that are waiting for millions of dollars, because they applied for grants in 2002. Their communities approved buildings. They built those buildings, and they're on the hook for all this."

Carlton says the district has been on the list for the money for the past seven years. He says he's not optimistic about seeing the money any time soon, especially since the bill is being holed up pending the passage of Governor Pat Quinn's budget.

One District-202 Board member had suggested any of that capital money could be used to pay for the $2.5 million expansion to Mable Woolsey, and even thought it should be put off briefly until the money comes in.

The board, however, felt there was no need to stop anything now, especially since the money is uncertain.
