Israeli Consul General Reacts To Obama's Middle East Speech
Israeli Consul General to the Midwest Orli Gil says she thought President Barack Obama gave a good speech addressing the Middle East this week. She says there were some things he said well, and other things that could use some work.

Gil started off by saying she greatly appreciated when the president said that the bond between Israel and the United States is unbreakable. She says Obama has Israel's interests at heart as much as any other American president. However, she said he was mistaken in stating that Israel was created as a direct result of the plight of the Jews during World War II and the Holocaust. Gil says those events certainly drew attention to the need of a Jewish state, but the process of creating one was 3,000 years in the making.

Gil says she might want the United States to provide more support to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, but it depends on what type of help it offers. She says giving the two sides a timetable to reconcile their differences, or forcing them to come to a resolution would be counterproductive, though she doesn't think the United States is thinking about doing that anyway.

What she would like to see, however, is the United States taking "steps that would reduce the feel of insecurity on both sides from terrorism" so Israel and Palestine can feel comfortable enough to hash out their own problems.
