Ameren Asks For Rate Increase
Ameren has filed a request for another rate hike, which would bring in about $226 million more to the company per year. Leigh Morris, spokesman for Ameren, says costs keep going up, and storm recovery is a part of it. He says, for example, the unofficial costs to restore power and repair damages from the most recent storm that hit Southern Illinois is $30 million.

Typical residential customers of Ameren, depending on whether your service is AmerenIP, AmerenCIPS, or AmerenCILCO, would see bills go up by as much as $97 a year for electricity and $60 a year for natural gas.

The Illinois Commerce Commission will have to make the decision on this request, which Ameren wants to start in May 2010. The last rate hike, for $162 million, went into effect in October 2008. Starting in July, you can go to www.illinoisratefacts.com and calculate the effect of this rate hike on your bill. In August, Ameren will include that information on its printed bills. Ameren has 1.2 million electricity and 840,000 natural gas customers in Downstate Illinois.
