Entrepreneurship Center Could Expand, But May Close First
The Galesburg-based Entrepreneurship Center of West Central Illinois is on the verge of expanding, but that might not happen before it has to close for a little while.

City officials say the federal Community Development Assistance Program grant money that has kept the center open will run out at the end of the month.

But City Manager Dane Bragg told the Galesburg City Council this week the city and Knox County are applying for a state-issued federal grant that could keep the center open, but change its approach a little.

"The grant, if awarded, could provide up to $1.2 million for entrepreneurship development, green technology development, and high-tech (business) incubation within Knox County," Bragg said. "The city has been working closely with its partners in the entrepreneurship initiative, including the Workforce Investment Board, Knox County, University of Illinois Extension, Business and Technology Center, as well as the Entrepreneurship Center."

The money, city officials say, would come from the Community Trade Adjustment and Assistance Program, and would be used to help entrepreneurs who want to create product or services that could be distributed on both national and global bases.

The City Council Monday committed $255,000 in matching funds requires for the grant if approved. Officials say it may not be until October before the status of the grant application is known -- meaning, the entrepreneurship center may be shuttered for an undetermined amount of time.
