Emerald Ash Borer Now Found in Rockford
A little green bug that destroys trees has turned up in a 14th Illinois county, the second new one this year.

The emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Rock Cut State Park, near Loves Park in Winnebago County. The county was already one of 24 under quarantine -- Iroquois and Ford were added earlier this year when the bug turned up at a highway rest stop. The quarantine restricts the movement of wood products.

The beetle is spread mainly through the transportation of firewood. It's not indigenous to the Midwest, and there is no known way to get rid of it. It has destroyed 25 million trees in the Midwest since its discovery in 2002.

Jeff Squibb, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, urges campers to buy firewood locally and burn it all.
