Cohen: I Have Enough Signatures to Run for Governor
Scott Lee Cohen, an independent candidate for governor, says he has the signatures needed to get on the ballot. He needs 25,000 by June 21, and at a news conference Thursday in Chicago, he claimed he has already met that requirement, though he didn’t specify how many signatures he has collected. He says he’s aiming for up to 150,000, to withstand challenges.

Cohen also took issue with the signature requirement for independent candidates and new political parties, which is five times the requirement for established political parties. The requirement is in place, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections, to assure that candidates demonstrate "a modicum of support." The established parties -- Democratic, Republican and Green -- achieved that status by getting at least 5 percent of the vote in the last election.

Cohen, a businessman, won the six-way Democratic primary for lieutenant governor in February, but dropped out under pressure from party leaders when a domestic violence arrest surfaced. He is now campaigning for governor as an independent.
