Crackdown on "Robocalls" Announced
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Federal Trade Commission says a federal judge in Chicago has pulled the plug on what the FTC calls one of the nation's largest "robocall" operations.

In announcing the crackdown Thursday, FTC official Steven Baker said the calls are deceptive, and are also illegal without written prior consent.

The latest restraining order was issued in Chicago by U.S. District Court Judge William Hart against Los Angeles-based SBN Peripherals Inc., Repo B.V., and Asia Pacific Telecom Inc., which has addresses in the Northern Mariana Islands, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.

It comes on the heels of a similar order issued by U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Cooke in Miami against Dolce Worldwide LLC. The Miami-Based Dolce allegedly made nearly $4 million selling service contracts for automobiles through the calls.
