Heavy Rains Inundate Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. (AP) -- Nearly a foot of rain has fallen on Monmouth since Memorial Day, and that's led to some major headaches for its public works department.

Director Andy Jackson says some of the older pipes in the town's aging sewer system have given way, which causes them to start sucking dirt. The ground eventually falls in, creating a sink hole.

Jackson says one of the holes in a resident's back yard was so deep, the city didn't have the resources to fix it. He says contractors with the proper safety equipment are usually called in to handle the problem, at a cost that could soar to $20,000 per hole.

Jackson says the city repairs bad sewer lines as it can, but it's virtually impossible to repair the entire system. The roughly 65 miles of pipes in Monmouth would cost about $65 million to replace.
