FIRST ON WGIL: State Links Knox County Salmonella Cases to Abingdon Subway
State and local health officials are giving a better idea about how the salmonella outbreak affecting Subway restaurants has impacted Knox County.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirms that the two reported salmonella cases in Knox County can be linked to the Subway restaurant in Abingdon.

The two are out of 71 cases statewide as of yesterday afternoon, including in Warren, Peoria, and Fulton Counties in the immediate area.

Knox County Health Department Public Information Officer Michele Fishburn tellsWGIL there's really only one way to not be affected by salmonella.

"The main thing we try to encourage is -- I think I'm going to have it tattooed on my forehead -- to wash your hands," Fishburn said. "Every time I talk to the media, I'm telling people to wash their hands. Hand washing for salmonella -- it is passed through feces. There's no nice way to say that, but that's the way it's passed. So, people want to make sure they wash their hands properly after they use the restroom."

Fishburn says Subways in Knox County have been cooperating with local health inspectors.

The state is requiring Subways affected by the salmonella to submit to frequent samples.

Anyone who ate at a Subway before June first and feels like they got sick because of it should call their doctor or the Health Department.
