State Behind in Payments to Knox County Health Department
County Health Departments across the state are struggling to keep bills paid as they wait for state payments.

Knox County is no different. At the monthly meeting of the Knox County Board of Health Thursday, Director of Family Health Services Rhonda Peterson said the state is six months behind in payments for the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer grant.

"They're behind about $37,000, paying us for services that we provide to the recipients of that grant," Peterson said. "We pay for mammograms and paps (pap smears) for eligible women that don't have insurance."

Peterson also says the states owes the department $105,000 for the Family Case Management grant. She says if the state cannot make payments on-time, the board may need to consider not renewing the contract with the state for those grants. Those decisions may be discussed at future meetings.

The board also discussed the Healthy Communities Project, which is the plan to address the most pressing health needs in the county in five years. Household surveys and focus groups are being developed for the project.
