District 205 School Board to Consider Tax Referendum
If the Galesburg School Board approves it Monday night, voters could ultimately get to decide on a relatively new way money could be brought into school districts throughout Knox County.

The District-205 Board will consider a resolution requesting that the Knox County Board consider putting a question on the November election ballot asking whether or not a 1-percent increase in the county sales tax should be implemented.

Illinois schools have been allowed under state law for the past several years to ask voters for such an increase as a way to pay for things like capital construction projects, however, they cannot be used for teacher salaries and operational expenses.

The school board's approval virtually assures that the question will be placed on the ballot, since school district's representing 51-percent of the county's students must approve it before voters get to decide. District 205 has around two-thirds.

All Knox County School Districts so far have indicated support of a county-wide sales tax increase, except for the Williamsfield School District.

The Galesburg School Board meets at 6:45 p.m., starting with a public hearing on the district's budget for the coming school year. That meeting is at Lincoln School.
