Peoria Prepares for Return of Columbus Replicas
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Christopher Columbus' fleet never sailed the Illinois River, but a knock off of one of his three ships is making a return trip to Peoria this summer.

And this time it's bringing company.

A replica of Columbus' Nina will make the latest of its several stops in Peoria from July 9 through July 12. It will be accompanied this time by a replica of the Pinta, another of Columbus' ships.

Columbus Fund spokesman A.J. Sanger says the ships will be open for tours. They serve as floating museums of sailing.

The Nina replica was built by hand in Brazil in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage to the Americas. The Pinta was added more recently, and both are on a year-round tour.
