Random Drug Testing in District 205 Could Move Down a Few Grades
The Galesburg School Board Monday could approve a plan that will continue a random drug testing plan that's been in place only a year, but could be extended to lower grades.

The District 205 board will consider the plan to make alterations to the random drug testing policy so that middle school students taking part in extra-curricular activities can also be tested.

That's in addition to any Galesburg High School student taking part in any athletic or other extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

When the policy was implemented last August, Galesburg Cottage Hospital was approved to do the testing, at a cost of about $25 per test, and that any student testing positive could face sanctions including possible drug treatment through Bridgeway.

District officials say the extension of random drug testing to the middle schools was recommended at the suggestion of a school board member, but they did not say which member that was.
