State's Crops Still Doing Good
Crops around the state are growing nicely, with corn now an average more than two feet tall. Corn is 28 inches tall, compared with 10 inches last year and 19 for the five-year average. Crop statistician Brad Schwab says last week's weather -- warm and humid -- was ideal for corn.

Soybeans are 81 percent emerged, ahead of the 76 percent recent average, and certainly ahead of last year's 45 percent. Schwab points out that more rain could cause problems for soybeans, because they don’t like wet feet and pooled water could kill them.

Ten percent of the wheat crop has already been harvested, ahead of the 6% five-year average.

Water's made a difference in topsoil moisture. Schwab says topsoil moisture was rated at one percent very short, one percent short, 51 percent adequate and 47 percent surplus. The Western crop reporting district is the most soggy, with the topsoil moisture content rated at 85 percent surplus.

Oats are also ahead of average.
