Pentagon: Kirk Mixed Politics With Military Duty
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A spokeswoman for Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk is brushing aside reports from the Pentagon that he's been cautioned twice for improperly mingling politics with his military service.

Kirk is a commander in the Navy Reserve.

The Defense Department said Monday night that Kirk was warned after two incidents of political activity while he was on active duty. Before being allowed to go on active duty again in Afghanistan, Kirk was required to sign a statement acknowledging he knew to avoid all political work.

In a statement Tuesday, Kirk spokeswoman Kristen Kukowski says the Defense Department wouldn't have issued a second waiver for the Illinois congressman's deployment to Afghanistan if any issues had been documented.

Kirk is running against Democrat Alexi Giannoulias for the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama.
