Abingdon School District Receiving Memorial Money
The generosity of two long-time Abingdon residents who've passed away will benefit the city's school district and several other organizations.

District 217 Superintendent Dr. Tami Roskamp told the Abingdon School Board earlier this month that the district received word in a letter that it's receiving a sizeable amount of money through the Zimmer Trust, which is named after Fred and Yvonne Zimmer. The Zimmers spent much of their life in Abingdon and loved the community. The Zimmer family previously assisted in the funding of the Zimmer Fitness Center on the Abingdon Middle/High School campus.

Roskamp tells WGIL there is a stipulation attached to how the money is to be spent.

"The restriction for these funds are for [the purchase of] computers and new technology," Roskamp said. "The amount is $250,000."

Roskamp says District 217 Technology Director Mark Rogers will put together a plan for using the money.

The Zimmers established several trusts during their lifetimes and the attorneys for their trustee say the couple made significant bequests to organizations in Abingdon. The bequests will be announced at Monday night's Abingdon City Council meeting.
