5 Dead, 1 Wounded in Peoria Shootings
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Police in Peoria say a series of shootings there left five people injured and one dead within about 12 hours, though they have not officially linked any of the crimes.

The series of shootings began Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities have identified the only fatality as 21-year-old Walter Holmes Jr. of Kewanee. Holmes died early Thursday morning during surgery at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center after being shot in the back in a parking lot in the Harrison Homes.

Police say Holmes was Peoria's 14th homicide victim of the year.

Two of those injured in the shootings were children from the city's North Valley neighborhood.

Twirty-seven-year-old Will Foster told police that someone fired seven shots at his rental home early Thursday morning, injuring his 5-year-old son, Jordan, and his 10-year-old niece, Starlia.
