U of I Report Against Department Mergers
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- A University of Illinois committee looking for ways to save money has concluded that merging several departments won't cut spending.

The committee has been looking at four areas that have 40 or fewer full-time faculty. They are the College of Media, the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the School of Labor and Employee Relations and the School of Social Work.

The committee concluded that mergers could hurt the academic work of those programs.

All four programs have already cut staff through buyouts and left open positions unfilled.

The group says the College of Media is already what it called "lean."

Several committees are going through ongoing reviews of university spending to look for savings.
