Orpheum's Energy Efficiency Efforts Continue; Changes on Civic Center Authority Board
More research will be done before efforts to replace the heating and cooling systems at Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre, and make the building overall more energy efficient, officially continue.

The Knox County Civic Center Authority Board this week voted to employ Johnson Controls to oversee efforts to potentially install new heating and cooling systems for the theatre, and to make the building more energy efficient in doing so.

Orpheum Theatre president Kate Francis tells WGIL while such renovation work has been estimated to cost over a million dollars, cost isn't set in stone yet.

"(We will be) establishing a firm scope of work, and then determining a more solid cost," Francis said. "Basically, we have to choose the option that the Orpheum would like to pursue, in terms of what types of equipment we would like to utilize, and how much zoning of heating and cooling we'd like to do, and develop that scope of work, then price that work out accordingly."

Francis says as it stands now, only one thermostat controls the air for the entire theatre, and there is no a/c in the dressing rooms. She says Johnson Controls will start work today, but won't be able to do any major work until August, when there's a break in the theatre's schedule.

This news comes the same week as it was learned that Francis was given a $10,000 yearly pay raise, upping her salary to $55,000 a year.

Francis says, however, she still has no benefits or health insurance, her salary is still well below industry averages, and she's doing the work of two laid off employees in addition to her own duties.

The CCA Board this week also approved Bob Shipplett becoming a member of the board, replacing Vern Stisser, and accepted the resignation of Galesburg Cottage Hospital CEO Ken Hutchenrider, who's leaving his position to take a job in Texas, leaving open another seat on the board.

The CCA Board has also extended an invitation to the Knox County Board to select someone to serve the CCA in a non-voting capacity, much like the City of Galesburg has now.
