Lake Storey Beach Closed; E-Coli Samples High
UPDATED 6:00 a.m. 6/19/10 Swimmers at Lake Storey beach will have to find somewhere else to go for a while.

Officials with the city of Galesburg say the Illinois Department of Public Health notified city staff Friday that the beach must be closed. State officials cited recent water samples that tested too high for e-coli in both the shallow and deep samples.

State officials told city staff that recent heavy rain resulting in significant run-off from pastures could have contributed to the increased e-coli levels. As a result, no swimming will be allowed in Lake Storey until further notice.

Lake Storey concessions, water slide and boat rentals will remain open.

Officials say the swimming beach will be re-opened after two sets of water samples test below the maximum allowable level for e-coli.
