A Rarity: IL Gas Prices Down from May to June
The price of gasoline typically goes up between May and June, but that's not happening this year in Illinois.

The Triple A Chicago Motor Club's monthly fuel gauge survey shows something unusual: prices this month that are less than last month. Triple-A spokeswoman Beth Mosher says that's not at all the norm.

"That's right and it's surprising to everyone," Mosher said. "This is the first time in quite a while that (gas price) numbers from May to June have gone down."

The Illinois average for regular unleaded in June is $2.82 a gallon, down from $3.05 in May.

Mosher says the decrease is primarily due to a $10 to $15 a barrel drop in the price of crude oil. The current price of gas is three cents cheaper than last year at this time. It's also about three cents higher than what most local gas stations are charging for a gallon of regular unleaded after a big jump in prices in the past week.
