Non-Profit Dental Clinics Can Find More Dentists
Non-profit dental clinics are pleased that Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a measure that’s supposed to help them find volunteer dentists.

The measure allows state government to alter rules to enable a dentist to volunteer his or her time at a community health center or a federally-qualified health center even when the dental provider is not enrolled as a Medicaid provider. The state can then reimburse the community health center for the dental services when provided by a volunteer dentist.

The bill sponsors, State Sen. Deanna Demuzio (D-Carlinville) and State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson (D-Urbana), say many dentists want to volunteer, but it takes too much paper work if they're not a Medicaid provider. They say that’s a problem because many dentists don’t take Medicaid patients because of the low, and slow, rate of reimbursement.

The governor signed the legislation at an event in Bloomington, where approximately 800 dentists and volunteers gathered to provide free dental care for an estimated 1,500 low-income children and adults. The two-day clinic was organized by the Illinois State Dental Society.
