| Persistent Rain Prompts Flash Flood Warnings; Motorists Urged to be Careful |
Rainfall that continues to fall is resulting in the National Weather Service issuing Flash Flood Warnings for parts of the Galesburg area on Tuesday.
One warning affects southern Knox, southern Peoria and northern Fulton counties until 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. The NWS said, at 8:39 a.m. Tuesday, Doppler Radar indicated slow-moving thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall across the warned area. Radar is indicating rainfall rates of up to two inches per hour across the warned area.
The service says runoff from the excessive rainfall will cause Flash Flooding to occur. Some locations that will experience flooding include: Canton, Peoria, Abingdon, Avon, Bartonville, Bellevue, Elmwood, Fairview, Farmington, Glasford, Hanna City, London Mills, Maquon, Trivoli, Yates City and West Peoria.
The Futon County emergency manager reported several inches of flowing water over several roads in northern Fulton County. That creates a potentially dangerous situation, and motorists are urged to avoid traveling across flooded roads. They instead should find alternate routes because it only takes a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.
In addition, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for northern Fulton County until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and the Spoon River at London Mills is under a Flood Warning until Saturday afternoon.
The NWS says the river stage at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday was 18.4 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. Minor flooding is occurring and forecast. Officials say the river will continue rising to near 20 feet by Thursday morning. It's expected to fall below flood stage by Saturday morning. |
