West Nile Found in Northern Illinois Mosquitos
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- State public health officials say mosquitoes trapped in Rock Island County have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Illinois Public Health Director, Dr. Damon Arnold, said yesterday the mosquitoes collected in the city of Rock Island on June 15 were the first of the year from northern Illinois to test positive for the virus.

Arnold said that so far this year, 10 of the state's 102 counties have reported either mosquitoes or birds testing positive for the disease.

Only five human cases of West Nile disease were reported in Illinois last year, and only 20 in 2008.

The worst years for human cases of West Nile in Illinois were 2005, with 252 cases, and 2006, with 215.
