Sen. Durbin Calls for Asian Carp Coordinated Response Commander
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is calling for immediate action in response to an Asian carp that was found in waters past the electronic barrier designed to keep them out of Lake Michigan.

Speaking on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Durbin says he has written to President Obama and called for the president to appoint a federal "coordinated response commander" to lead the fight against the invasive species.

Durbin says appointing a coordinated response commander would signal that the Asian carp problem has become a national priority.

"The capture of a live [Asian Carp] on the wrong side of the electric barrier changes everything," Durbin said. "We have to do redouble our efforts and do everything in our power to stop this invasive species from entering Lake Michigan."

The letter was sent to the White House Friday and was signed by 10 U.S. senators whose states boarder the Great Lakes.

Officials announced Wednesday the fish was caught in Lake Calumet in Chicago, about six miles from Lake Michigan. Electrofishing and netting were planned remove any Asian carp.
